Dentures

Unfortunately, due to natural reasons, accidents, injury, and conditions like gum disease, tooth loss might be inevitable. However, you do not have to remain without a full set of teeth. With medical and dental advancements, Ortega Family Dental can help you restore your smile through the use of dentures. Dentures are a removable replacement for missing teeth.

Why Do I Need Dentures?

If you have stubborn aching teeth beyond repair, removing and replacing them with dentures will relieve you of the pain and prevent gum infections. Dentures also help maintain your mouth structure around the cheek and lips, improving your smile. They also make chewing and biting possible, enabling you to maintain your normal diet even after tooth loss.

Complete Dentures

Complete dentures comprise immediate and conventional types. Immediate dentures are positioned right after teeth removal. Therefore, our team will make them before your tooth removal appointment. Healing will take place with the dentures on, making the adjustment process easy for you. After healing, your gums and bone will usually shrink, requiring a readjustment of your immediate dentures. Conventional denture placement is after complete healing, usually between eight to 12 weeks after teeth removal.

Partial Dentures

These dentures are ideal where an individual still has some natural teeth in place. They can be removable or precision. Partial removable dentures comprise replacement teeth attached to a plastic base that mimics the gums. A metal framework connects the teeth and base and holds the denture in position. Partial dentures, apart from filling the gaps between your teeth, ensure the other teeth remain in place. A precision partial denture is removable with internal attachments that give a more natural appearance.

What to Expect When Getting Dentures

The process of getting dentures will vary depending on your oral health and the number of teeth missing. To ensure your comfort, our professionals will first inform you of the process you will go through. We will then do a dental examination of your teeth to check your oral health for infection, decay, and underlying bone status. Next, we will take a mold of your teeth and gums and use it to make the dentures in the laboratory. If you are getting immediate dentures, then teeth extraction will follow, after which the team will fix your dentures.

Caring for Your Dentures

Like natural teeth, dentures also require cleaning to avoid plaque buildup that causes bad breath and stains. Plaque might also spread to natural teeth and your gums, causing cavities and gum disease. To care for your dentures, remove them and rinse loose food particles. Using a denture brush and cleaner, clean your dentures, giving special attention to the under clasps where bacteria accumulate. You should also clean and massage your gums with a clean, damp cloth. If you have partial dentures, use a soft-bristled toothbrush to clean your teeth. At night, remove your dentures and soak them in warm water to prevent warping and drying out.

Dentures make it possible for you to once again chew and bite normally even after partial or complete tooth loss. Call Ortega Family Dental at (904) 914-4008 for more information on how you can get dentures.
